DECEMBER 30TH, 2015:
One thing I love about the end of the year is its a time to look back at what happened and to envision what I'd like the next year to hold.
2015 was an intense year for me; I focused on the business side of this whole shebang, on Test Apes and ambient music for Fried Smiling. I've also been digitizing a large pile of special cassettes and other music ephemera for a big project I hope to unveil next year at some point...I often feel like I'm just getting started even though I know I've been at it for over 30 years--pfft. Its weird.
Anyway, here is a summary of 2015's activity:
Maxbrodyworld released 9 items:
Test Apes, Stranded On Earth
Test Apes, Mystery Tool
Areola 51, Live at Headhunters
Smitty
Insect Sex Act, Feel like Makin Larve
Pink Anvil, Cubed
Goobersmoochers, Mischief
Ye Olde Castetons, The Great Interruption
Chris Ballew and Max Brody, 151207-2

I worked long-distance with MASQUERADE AS ANGELS in Austin, TX--which is John Hawkins of CRUST, Jeff Campbell, and myself in a rather 1980's sounding project. It is slow-going, but will be worth the wait!!
I've also been working on FRIED SMILING which is an ambient project for video with Jeff Kinart. We've amassed a lot of stuff at this point...That project has been truly inspirational to me. I'm super excited to share this stuff. Both projects have been quite active all year...
I was proud to interviewed for the upcoming documentary about the wonderful 80's Austin punk/funk band, the BIG BOYS. In some places they are absolute LEGENDS, and in other places they are complete unknowns. KNOW THEM!! THEY WERE AWESOME I PROMISE! Hopefully that movie will be out sometime next year, too. And hopefully it will totally kick ass! I am hoping for some NAUGAHYDE DREAM SEQUENCE stuff to make it into the film. Cross Fingers!
Lastly, I became producer for a band that I am not in for the first time. I'd like to thank Morgan and the boys for believing in me. We are about 1/3 of the way done, and I am really excited about how its turning out. At the moment the band is calling themselves CHAVA, but, that may change...not sure yet.
Right now I would say that next years plans include:
Finishing that Chava recording and the Masquerade As Angels stuff, or at least enough to share SOMETHING.
Test Apes completing another something and starting playing more shows. We have a good EP's worth of stuff recorded already...We've also talked about hiring ourselves out as a rhythm section.
There may be several more old Texas nuggets to release...One I know for sure is the final Goobersmoochers LP. Its called "Left On Piedmont".
A Fried Smiling EP should be coming out, hopefully with a few other interesting news tidbits connected with the project ...that I don't want to mention yet...ahem...
I plan on creating more ambient music next year whether it is with Chris Ballew, Fried Smiling or just by myself. I have found its creation to be really satisfying. I can't wait to start sharing THAT stuff with everyone.
I've been seriously considering starting a YouTube channel...we shall see about that. I feel like it might be a convenient way to have a bunch of stuff on play lists and keep stuff organized that way. Either way, more videos should be coming out, too. I'm hoping to work long distance with Kithcart and getting active with Darkstack as well. In 2015 he not only dealt with health issues, but moved to South Carolina. So it looks like Darkstack is now completely out of Austin, which is pretty crazy. The old compound is rotting and falling into disrepair, thanks to Capital Metro... oh well. Now we'll be NATIONWIDE...BEEF DIAPER coming soon to a theater near you?
Lots more to come! I'd like to thank everyone who listened, shared, communicated, purchased or somehow became involved with Maxbrodyworld in 2015! Please help me take this organization to the next level and help me spread the word in 2016. Happy Bullstar and Happy New Year!!

December 7th, 2015:
I am happy to have just hung out with my old buddy Chris Ballew...we used to have this little band called CREEPY STICK around 1992 or so. Then he got all famous by starting another band called PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. I think the last time I saw him was on their tour bus back behind Liberty Lunch in Austin...so... when would that have been? 1997? Quite a bit has happened since then, so we had a lot of catching up to do.
...regardless, within a few hours we recorded something in his little studio that's awesome and tiny-- just like Chris likes stuff--but be forewarned: it is an AMBIENT piece. I went ahead and made a CREEPY STICK page and posted up our number there, so check it out here: NEW CREEPY STICK PAGE QUICK LINK
I guess it will be the home for anything Creepy Stick related that we decide to share, lol...there may be some really, really old recordings somewhere...hmmm....

Still super busy around here: While Kinart is finishing up writing his first season of PSYCHOTROPIA, we are holding off on putting out our EP until we can both concentrate on it. I did start a bit of graphics work on it. His deadline is sometime in December, so after that we ought to be picking things back up. I'm really excited about our ambient, music-for-video project-- FRIED SMILING.
--------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, I have picked up a bit of Producer-Guy work. I was recently hired by a new local Seattle band to produce a 3 song demo for them as they get start preparing to book shows. As often is the case, they've put off choosing a name for the band and only have a 'temporary one'. Otherwise I'd tell you their name... but hopefully that will be fixed up soon. We have gotten together over the last 2 weekends, though, utilizing the MOBILE FRUMUNDA STUDIO over at their space, and wound up tracking drums and guitars for 8 songs instead of just 3. So, its going better than expected... more on that as it develops. I am for hire, if you are in the Seattle area. (to reach me, use a contact form at the bottom of most pages of this site.)
---------------------------------------------
I'm happy to say TEST APES are getting active again: We will be making one of our rare live performances in Seattle on December 23rd at a club called THE FUNHOUSE. click HERE to link over to a facebook page for this event for more information...
With THAT being said, I have gone ahead and taken down the TEST APES t-shirts and 1st Album CD/DVDs as they are just about sold out anyway, and I will be taking them to the gig.
Also, in response to both the upcoming gig as well as many requests, I have made a VERY LIMITED RUN OF PHYSICAL CD COPIES OF OUR 2 EPs, "Stranded On Earth", and "Mystery Tool". They are numbered and come with 3 cute little stickers to boot! Happy Holidays! For Sale in the store...CLICK HERE FOR A QUICK LINK

Quite a bit going on here! First and formost, I would like to announce the name of a project that I've hinted at, but is new and we've decided we are ready to make this announcement. I am very excited to finally let this cat out of its bag: over the course of the year I have been quietly working with a super-talented individual, Mr. Jeffrey Kinart, on a series of ambient musical recordings --with a concept.
That concept is music for film. Kinart lives in Hollywood and is a screen-writer and musician. We have been working long-distance, swapping files over the net, and attempting to get together background music for two big projects that shall remain unnamed at the moment. Within a few months, we have come up with over 50 compositions totaling over 2.5 hours of material. This is an amazing amount of output and I am pretty proud about it, even if none of it were ever to get used for any movie or TV show...
But hopefully it will. Hey Hollywood music supervisors...we're for hire, too! With all that said, He and I have decided to put out a demo. An EP. A 5-songer. A tease. I am working on getting that together so a release is immanent!
We are called, "FRIED SMILING". If you like abstract, soundtracky, ambient music, you are in for a treat.

On the Austin, TX front, I found that my old buddy and bandmate John Voskamp recently posted an old picture of our band YE OLDE CASTLETONS playing a gig at STUBB's BBQ, which got me all remembering stuff ...and I felt like it was time that I put together a second LP for YOC since we had so much stuff kinda demo-ed out before I screwed it all up by joining MINISTRY. I still love YOC. Bill writes great music, and the 3 of us had a certain something; we were a tight lil unit. This stuff really has stood the test of time in my mind. What I have collected together has a variety of sound qualities, but I'm proud of all of it. You can check it out by visiting the YOC page.

Also on the Austin front, MASQUERADE AS ANGELS (with JOHN HAWKINS from CRUST and JEFF CAMPBELL and myself) have slowly but steadily been getting songs recorded in a long distance fashion. The material is retro 80's in the best sense of the phrase and is sounding amazing. In my experience, with some projects the more you polish the turd, the worse it gets. In this case, though, its the opposite; the time its taking to make these recordings will be worth the wait...

Meanwhile, up here in Seattle, the TEST APES have decided to perform a show this fall and have started looking into its booking. Danny's back in town and we are getting together tomorrow to jam and scheme. With him receiving the 2015 STEVE MARTIN AWARD for excellence, innovation and artistry in BANJO playing, we are planning on taking it up a notch, too... we are looking to get busy.
I have also recently reconnected with an old, old bandmate named ERIC CARNELL (he and I had been in DRUNKEN IMMORTALS, MOTOR VIRUS and PURE GRAIN ALCOHOL together back in the early 1990's & had ended up playing in a number of bands, TREEPEOPLE being one of the better known). Its been really great hanging out with him. You never know, we may start something up...
I am in full networking mode, attempting to crack the nut that is SEATTLE.
Now go check out some CASTLETONS !!!

I had the honor today of being filmed for an upcoming documentary about Austin, Texas' one and only BIG BOYS. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to talk about NAUGAHYDE DREAM SEQUENCE, Biscuit's last recordings (that have barely seen the light of day. You can listen to them by clicking HERE for the first LP, and HERE for the other)... as well as my long friendship with Rey Washam and some of the things we have done together. Thanks to Joe Salinas, Jennifer Beck and whoever is helping them with this monumental work! From what I was able to gather, it should be a worthy documentary for such a band.
Last night I remembered the fact that when Tim Kerr's band, JACK O'FIRE played Seattle back in 1993, they stayed at my house for a few days since my roomate EROK, and JACK O'FIRE's bass player had been in the band CATBUTT together. I had already been thinking about moving to Austin, TX but it was really after talking with those guys (...since none of them could come up with even one thing that "sucked about Austin") I decided to go for it. I owe so much to the BIG BOYS. Thank you TIM, REY, and BISCUIT!
I never did meet Chris Gates...But thanks to him and drummers other than Rey, too...I can't imagine what my life would have been like if ya'll weren't in it. Crazy!

February 13th, 2015:
Its the day before Valentines Day and Friday the 13th so I'm celebrating early with the release of two LOVELY new releases!
The first is a solo effort I did back in 2011-12. Its called SMITTY. I’ve been hesitant to release it. I wrote it for and to a woman I am smitten with, hence the name. It has been her personal album from me since 2010. She’s ok with me releasing it now, which for a time I thought I wouldn’t, but I am actually really proud of this one. Parts of it are pretty, so be forewarned...its just a bit different from my normal thing.
The second is an EP from INSECT SEX ACT, called "Feel Like Makin' Larva". Its 4 songs from our earliest recording that has been way out of print for over 10 years...one of which features the late, great BISCUIT TURNER from the BIG BOYS on vocals!! RAWK!
Here are some links to get you there:
February 2nd, 2015:
TEST APES put another video up from their upcoming EP...check it out on the page for the EP. Link below:
January 27th, 2015:
I just uploaded about 100 images of old flyers from Texas. They have been added to the already existing pile of flyer images in the VAULT, if you're into that kind of thing...
January 20th, 2015:
TEST APES have been busy! One more song to finish before they can release a new 5 song studio EP called STRANDED ON EARTH.
More info, a look at the cover art and a brand new video are now up on their new page for the EP. click the link below to check it out!
January 10, 2015:
WELL...Last month I ran an update on my computer and it made my iTunes dissapear, which is the program that I had been using to transfer files into mp3 format for this website. LOL! I haven't gotten around to dealing with it. Ssssoo... for the time being and until I get that minor issue straightened out I'm going to continue releasing stuff over at: maxbrodyworld.bandcamp.com
...and I'll play catch up after later on and make the individual corresponding homepage for them here on this site.
Its no biggie, but that IS the deal.
On that note, its my pleasure to announce VOLUME 3 of the BOOTLEG SERIES: AREOLA 51 at HEADHUNTERS back patio, 2005, available now on bandcamp...
Meanwhile, TEST APES have had another killer session earlier in the month, creating at least 4 more great song ideas in the process. It took place in my brother Doug's basement where he has a home studio, and where we had done one of our first sessions. This time, though, Doug engineered, and I used his acoustic drum kit instead of my electronic kit like I usually do. Both were good decisions and the recordings have a nice sound already as rough mixes. (THANK YOU DOUG BRODY!) Danny has also been getting into building a modular analog synthesizer...his own super old-school style rig! and we are hoping to start incorporating that into our thing...so that's really exciting.
By the way, he told me a very interesting fact the other day that I'd like to share: as it turns out, the earliest forms of electronic music as well as the earliest bluegrass music are contemporaneous! They both started around the 1920's-30's...its crazy, but true...so I guess we are tapping into some of that action. We like a best of both worlds approach...of past vs. future, of natural vs. synthetic.
We are trying to get some new stuff out to everyone soon...almost there...but not yet...

We like a best of both worlds approach...of past vs. future, of natural vs. synthetic.
We are trying to get some new stuff out to everyone soon...almost there...but not yet...
