Sometimes, I get in an extra experimental mood, or off on a tangent. Most likely, they will be a one-time affair only, but you never know...VOL 2 is an homage to my free jazz roots...sorta (fnord). GUILTY PLEASURE, VOL 1. THE BEACH BOYS
Max Brody, all performances and production.
All songs written by The Beach Boys.
What can I say. In 2010, I was having a mid-to-late 1960's moment. After all the stress that I had been going through in my personal life, I decided to create something that would use a lot of "pretty" tones as opposed to the very aggressive and distorted ones I had been used to making. I needed to make a happy place with music for a while instead of vent frustration or flex muscles, I guess. So, this was the first set of tunes I did with this mindset, using favorites from the Beach Boys psychedelic period. I'm not a HUGE Beach Boys fan, but a lot of childhood memories are attached to their sound for me, which was just the happy place I needed. I do think some of their songs are great, and that Brian Wilson is an inspiration. I hope that he would not hate them if he ever were to hear this stuff somehow...ppppssssshhhhhtttt!
Anyway, soon I wanted to do a record like that with original music. It was a whole different experience dealing with recording and mixing delicate tones rather than bludgeoning ones. Plus, if a bludgeoning tone did get used it really stood out, so I got into the dynamics thing quite a bit. That was the beginning of the "Smitty" project...but thats another story.
